UPDATES with Brozovic ban, clarifies Mourinho .’s sanction
Angel Di Maria has been banned for two games for elbowing an opponent during their humiliating loss to newly promoted Monza, Serie A said on Tuesday.
Argentine winger Di Maria was sent off five minutes before half-time after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat, also Monza’s first ever win in the Italian top league, after he struck out at Armando Izzo.
He later blamed himself for Juve’s first league game of the season, which left them eighth and seven points behind leaders Napoli.
The 34-year-old will miss Bologna’s visit and Juve’s trip to champion AC Milan after the international break, in which he will take part in two friendlies ahead of the World Cup.
Jose Mourinho will miss Roma’s visit to his old team Inter Milan after his one-game suspension.
The Portuguese was suspended for “entering the field in the 11th minute of the second half” of his team’s 1-0 home defeat to Atalanta on Sunday and “raging against an opposing player”.
Roma had feared Mourinho would be hit with a staggering three-game ban after his vehement protests against referee Daniele Chiffi for failing to give a penalty for a challenge on Nicolo Zaniolo.
Inter’s Marcelo Brozovic will also miss the San Siro game, having picked up his fifth booking of the season in the humiliation of his side 3-1 at Udinese.
Croatian midfielder Brozovic is a key part of Simone Inzaghi’s squad and will be a big miss for an Inter team that has lost three of their seven games early in the campaign.
